Baja California

Baja California has emerged as one of the most prominent wine destinations in Mexico.

The history of wine tourism in this region dates back to the late 19th century, when the first wineries were established in 1888 in the Santo Tomás Valley. However, the boom in wine tourism began in the 1970s, driven by the creation of various wineries in the Guadalupe Valley.

As the quality of the wine rose, the region began to attract the attention of winemakers, sommeliers, and tourists, becoming an important destination for wine lovers.

Baja California, located between 30 and 32 degrees north latitude within the area known as the "Wine Strip," has more than 4,500 hectares of vineyards planted and around 260 wine projects that represent 70% of the national wine production, establishing this state as the undisputed leader of Mexican wine culture.

Number of Vineyards

Currently, it is estimated that there are over 150 wineries and vineyards in Baja California, most of which are concentrated in the Guadalupe Valley, Santo Tomás Valley, and San Antonio de las Minas Valley. This growth has been accompanied by an increase in the offer of wine tourism experiences, such as wine tastings, guided tours, and gastronomic festivals.

Types of Grapes

Baja California is famous for a variety of grapes, with a special focus on the following:Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc

These varieties have shown great potential in the region, thanks to the favorable geographical and climatic conditions.

Geographical Characteristics and Climate

The wine valleys of Baja California are located between 18 and 25 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, which creates a mild Mediterranean climate, with humid winters and dry, temperate summers. Each valley has its own unique characteristics in terms of microclimates, soil composition, water availability, and marine influence, which act as a thermoregulating effect.

The properties of the soils of Baja California, the terroir, generally define the characteristics and personality of the wines: their structure, color, acidity, aroma, and finesse, achieving an excellent balance.

The main valleys that make up the region are:Tanamá Valley / Tecate, Guadalupe Valle, La Grulla Valley, San Antonio de las Minas, Ejido El Porvenir, Francisco Zarco, Ojos Negros Valley, Santo Tomás Valle, San Jacinto Valley, San Vicente Valley
