United States

The United States is the fourth largest wine producing country in the world and at the same time ranks 1st in terms of wine consumption in the world. As of 2022, 266 American Viticultural Areas (American Viticultural Areas – AVAs, an analogue of the concept of "appellation") are registered, located on the territory of 33 states, of which 146 are in California.
The first Europeans to explore North America, the Viking expedition from Greenland, called it Vinland because of the abundance of grapes. The earliest wine produced in what is now the United States was produced by French settlers from the Scuppernong grape variety. In the territory that would later become the Southwest of the United States, in the kingdoms of Las California and Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, there were missions to plant vineyards, the traditions of which have been preserved in the modern wine industry of California and New Mexico.
