Uruguay

Winemaking in Uruguay is quite developed and goes back to the middle of the XVII century, when the Spanish colonialists brought a vine to the territory of the Eastern strip. The process of Uruguayan wine entering the international market began in the 1970s, in 1978 French experts visited the country. In 1995, the congress of the International Organization of Viticulture and Winemaking was held in Punta del Este. Currently, there are vineyards in 15 of the 19 departments of Uruguay, but most of them are located in the hills north of the city of Montevideo.

The territory of Uruguay is located at the same latitude as the best wine-growing regions of Argentina, South Africa and Australia. Thus, all of it is suitable for growing grapes, and this is an important branch of the country's agriculture. 90% of the country's vineyards are concentrated in the Southern zone, the climate in this region is strongly influenced by the sea. The southwest, with 5% of vineyards, and the South Coast are influenced by the Uruguay River, the land there is with excellent drainage. The Central and Central-eastern zones are located in the southern part of the Rio Negro basin, where the climate is excellent and the land has a rocky texture.
